Movie Review - Silent Hill

OK, I'm reviewing the DVD version of this. Which doesn't really come with much as far as extras go, I'm assuming lots was held back to create a special edition or 2 disc DVD version some time later in the near future. All you really get is a "making of" which could have been much longer and much more detailed, the trailer and the TV spots. The only subtitles were English.

No commentaries at all, I'd have at least expected one from the director or cast. Having said that I now have to say that prior to viewing, all I knew about Silent Hill was this. It was based on a Playstation game and that was it. Without knowing anything about the game or its background, story or history this film and it's plot are very difficult to follow.

The film starts with a family and their daughter who sleepwalks and talks about a place called Silent Hill. She also draws pictures about that place that she never remembers drawing. So against her husbands wishes she takes their daughter to Silent Hill which we discover is an abandoned town, abandoned after a fire in the coal mines under the town.

After running from a Motorcyle Cop who tries to pull her vehicle over, the lead female - Rose, drives to Silent Hill. She has to smash through a locked gate and drive over a bridge and almost crashed and knocks herself out trying to avoid a young girl in the road. She wakes up to discover her daughter is gone from the car and spends the rest of the movie wondering through many weird and bizarre locations trying to find her.

During the course of her journey we find out that the people in the town are all dead. I assume she and her daughter and the cop also died in their accidents getting into Silent Hill. The people in the town are forced to face the fact they are all dead and that the child they sacrificed was not the cause of the sin in the town.

The ending is very strange that Rose and her daughter return home but her husband can not see anyone in the home, this is why I think she is dead. Very, very, very, very very weird. Would playing the game make me understand the film more? I don't know.
