There isn't an original idea in this film. I'm assuming it's supposed to be set some time after Superman II, this is the only way Lex Luthor can know where the Fortress Of Solitude is. As he was there with Non, Zod and Ursa he'd have known a few things about the Fortress but not much. The fact that this film relies on ideas from the 4 already established Superman films is one of the many factors that kills it. The fact that Luthor's girl is an obvious plant as soon as you see her car out of control. The fact that the plane rescue has been done before but Superman seems to struggle to hold the plane, his super strength doesn't seem up to the task of holding up a mere plane.
Likewise his struggle with the car. Luthor gets hold of a lot of Kryptonite too easily. I also have issues with Kryptonite, if it's lethal to Kryptonians why aren't they all struggling to even live on Krypton. The effects of Krytponite aren't acted well enough by Superman. Kevin Spacey doesn't try hard enough to play Lex Luthor and is a pitiful imitation of Gene Hackman. The whole Lex using a woman to distract Superman has been done to death. This was nothing new and none of the cast were very good. Even the idea of Superman having a son (He's an alien, it's unlikely he could even reproduce with a human and even if he could the speed of his ejaculation would kill Lois. And exactly when were he and Lois supposed to have had sex?) has been mooted before and it was a bad idea. The ending was weak and the plot of Luthor wanting land off the coast had already been done in the 1st Superman film.
