I like Jack Black. I'm a big fan. Which is why I'm watching this. I just about tolerated Mos Def in the Hitch Hikers movie. The idea of this film is OK, a video shop has all its tapes accidentally wiped so the guy decides to shoot his own versions of the movies and rent them. Sounds good.
The only trouble is how they "get wiped".
Jerry (Jack Black) gets magnetized after being hit by high voltage whilst trying to sabotage a power substation. Only problem there, ANY voltage in a substation would have killed him stone dead. Firstly, it's impossible to magnetize a person at all. It's also impossible for a person to generate enough current to wipe a video tape. It's been proved if you held a tape and were hit by lightening it'd work. NO other method would work.
Likewise a video tape doesn't really contain much actual metal, its mostly plastic so it wouldn't be attracted to ANY magnet, no matter how strong it is so the tape shouldn't jump to Jerry's hand like it does in the shop.
So having already jumped the shark for AWFUL science they attempt to make Ghostbusters. A few points on the original here. They DON'T catch the 1st ghost in the library, that's how they learn about PKE energy and form the ideas of how to trap ghosts. From that failure. So they screwed up there.
Also Mos Def's remarks about Jerry being radioactive are complete garbage. He was exposed to electricity which is nothing like radiation. Idiot! It's also impossible for Jerry's urine to be magnetic. And any kind of magnetic effect he may have had (if it were actually possible) would dissipate pretty quickly and certainly not pass through his internal organs like that.
The Sweded versions of 2001 & King Kong are both very funny. I can't comment on Rush Hour 2 having never seen it. Now, as to the charges of copyright infringement. Also utter garbage. The tapes DON't belong to the studios. Most video stores buy their stock. So we debunked that lie. Also the accusation of piracy or bootlegging would involve ORIGINAL movies being copied. which is not happened, so yet again they have no case.
The whole Fats Waller living in the store comes out as an (obvious) lie & I'm not even sure why they even bothered to include that storyline. If they needed to get Danny Glover away from the store for a few days they could have come up with any number of better ideas than that one.
As far Jerry doing black-face to play Fats Waller. Did ANYONE ever think the real black people in the movie were going react negatively to that. no acting required in that scene where their all looking at him with evil looks! Possibly the worst thing about this movie is its complete lack of an ending, its left up in the air. Is the shop going be demolished? I wouldn't recommend this movie at all. It's not one of jack black's best, Danny glover is OK in it and mos def is bearable. the people of the neighbourhood as the supporting cast are the people who make this movie what it is. All thumbs down and not recommended.
